Cherry, Walnut & Orange Cake

There’s really not much to say about this bake — it’s a simple cake with a moist, slightly grainy interior and a crusty, crunchy exterior.

Cherry, Walnut & Orange Cake

Filled with cherries and walnuts, and scented with orange zest, it’s a cake perfect for tea-time or after dinner with hot, strong coffee and good company.

Recipe for Cherry, Walnut & Orange Cake

Produces one 7-inch cake.


  • 75g cherries, quartered
  • 75g walnuts, roughly chopped
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 150g unsalted butter, softened
  • 80g caster sugar
  • 75g ground almonds
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 150g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup milk


Step 1: Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and line one 7-inch round cake tin.

Step 2: Toss the cherry and walnut pieces in the 1 tablespoon of flour.

Step 3: Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.  Mix in the ground almonds before beating in the eggs one at a time. Add the vanilla, salt and orange zest and mix in. Stir in the flour, baking powder and milk. Finally, fold in the floured cherry and walnut pieces.

Step 4: Pour the batter into the cake tin and bake for 1 hour. Cool, slice and serve.
